Planning Your Project

Main aspects prior to buying a screen

At Tecnoled HK, we take care of advising our customers in the installation of LED screens. Before starting to develop any project, we must ask ourselves some core questions:

  • Location of the LED screen: Depending on the location it can be: LED screen for indoor, LED screen for showcase (window), or LED screen for outdoor.
  • The size of your LED screen: Custom dimension setups corresponding to the physical parameters of the installation space.
  • The viewing distance: You need to prioritize the target audience that will see the LED screen from the shortest and farthest distance (determining pixel pitch).
  • Objective: Depending on the use, it can be an advertising LED screen, an informative LED display, or an LED display for events and temporary staging.

General Questions

Indoor and outdoor LED screens are different in many ways, but they differ mainly in two aspects:

  • The brightness of the LED screen: In the case of outdoor LED screens, the brightness must be higher because the LED screen is exposed to direct sunlight. Also, in most cases it covers a greater viewing distance than an indoor LED screen.
  • Weather protection: A very important aspect that you should take into account according to your project. Outdoor LED screens contain protection against rainwater, direct sunlight, dust, high temperatures, wind, cold, among others (typically rated IP65/IP67), while indoor LED screens do not require it.

They are made up of different elements, however the main components of an LED screen are:

  • LED boards or LED modules: The face of the display containing individual pixel diodes (SMD/Cob).
  • Cabinets: The metallic framework holding multiple modules and electronics.
  • Power supply: Conversion units delivering correct voltage.
  • Receiver card: Data transmission hub communicating video signal.
  • Internal cables: Flat ribbon ribbon data cables and power links.

Pixel pitch refers to the distance in millimeters between the center of one pixel and the center of the adjacent pixel. A smaller pitch means higher density and higher resolution, allowing closer viewing distances. As a general rule of thumb, a pixel pitch of P2.5 is viewable from 2.5 meters, P4 from 4 meters, and P10 from 10 meters.
